Own it all
I just finished reading Jamie Rubin’s article on updating old posts. The man has been blogging since 2005 and is still writing. Other bloggers like Kev Quirk and Derek Sivers have publishing things online for decades.
I’ve only started blogging a year ago. There were times when I couldn’t write anything, even when I wanted to. There were times that I didn’t want to write, but my brain is itching to write something that it doesn’t make any sense when I read them.
I quote a line from Jamie’s article where he states that he doesn’t udpate old posts:
They represent the world as I saw it back when the post was written. Since this blog doubles as a kind of public journal of record for me, I don’t want to update posts that have historical context.
He also states that he does make minor changes from time to time, to correct his errors with new facts and some mispellings.
I find the editing to be tedious, especially when I’ve already posted an article already. But editing a post can’t be ignored. It’s necessary, not only for others to read for also for my future self when I come back to read what I wrote.
Maybe the best approach for this is to remind myself not to stay too long in editing.
But here’s to owning to all of it.
The posts that came out of all the thinking that serve as a journal or a note to me.
The posts that have grammtical errors, bad structure, and confusing storytelling.
All these can be improved through time and feedback with a workflows and systems.
They’re my words, both good and bad. I’m owning them all.
