Unsubscribing from Spotify

Not that I'm a musician or helped produce music on the platform. I've been a Spotify Premium user since 2018 while I was still in college. Monthly premium was just ₱79 per month. After that, my fiancée and I subscribed to Spotify Duo, which is about ₱229 per month.

Last month, I got an email with mentioning some changes in policies and increase in monthly fees, we thought about unsubscribing.

What hasted this decision was the dissatisfaction of indie artists with the platform. For not getting paid (even earning negative revenue, although I'm not sure if the artists themselves will have to pay the amount or deduct it when their revenue has increased).

So I'm led to believe that the price increase is just for Spotify to gain more profit without paying its music contributors.

Besides, I'm a lazy listener these days, and I only listen to music when I go for a drive.

Will be giving YouTube Music a try. Otherwise, I'm going back to my 2000s and start downloading MP3s.

Edited as of Dec 2025: Subscribed to YouTube Premium instead, works just fine for me. My wife is still getting used to it the UI. I admit that it's not as algorithmic as Spotify's, which she truly appreciates. She'll give YT music a chance until the end of the year. We'll consider Spotify again (for credit card purposes) but for her use only.
