Goodbye Obsidian Sync

This is me saying goodbye to Obsidian Sync and hello again my dear Bea…

Nope. Still using Obsidian. Just not using Sync anymore. Instead, I’m using YAOS, yet another obsidian server, an open-source, free sync engine designed to give you real-time Obsidian syncing across all your devices without paying for official Obsidian Sync.

I got an email saying that my Obsidian Sync was about to expire. I made a note a few months back that when this notification appears, I would have to contemplate if I would renew my subscription to Obsidian Sync (~$100) or switch back to Bear 2 (subscribed until Feb 2027) for financial reasons. I wanted to stop paying for apps that have cheap/free alternatives.

Back then the plan was to use the apps I paid premium for wait for their expirations.

  1. Obsidian (via Sync) expires in August 2026
  2. Bear 2 until Feb 2027
  3. Apple Notes (Google Keep for my Android devices).

But everything changed when I saw YAOS. Kudos to Kavin for sharing this on Reddit.

The YAOS docs were overwhelming at first. My screen kept loading and my cloudfare dashboard wouldn’t connect. I thought this was a skill issue following instructions. I was about to pin my Bear 2 app on my Dock. As it turns out, I just had bad internet connection.

It took me less than 10 minutes to get things running and I have all (4) of my devices synced with yaos for Obsidian.

Obsidian, ftw.
